Society for Positive Mother’s Development (SPMD) was started in the year 2004 by the group of positive mothers. It was started for the welfare of positive women as they are the ultimate sufferers in the HIV scenario, no matter who is the cause for the infection. So it started working to remove stigma and discrimination for positive women in the society and also it aims that no women should be infected in future.

Gradually it started giving peer counseling, counseling training, support group meeting, advocacy, awareness program and after one year of working, it got fund from APAC – Aids Prevention and Control project in 2005 to focus more on Care and Support and Home Based Care.

Activities:

  • Advocacy in hospital to conduct delivery

Advocacies are conducted in hospitals in Tirupur, Udumalpet, and Pollachi to conduct delivery for positive mothers.

  • Support Group Meeting (SGM)

SGM is conducted on third Sunday of all months and nutritional support is provided during this meet for both adults and children.

  • Yoga training

Yoga training is conducted on every week for around 12-15 PLHA’s in the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital premises. Around 120 members were benefited by this program in the year 2006.

  • Educational Support

Education support is provided to children of positive parents. Around 68 children were given educational support in the year 2006.

  • Income Generation Programme (IGP)

Income Generation Programme is conducted for the positive mothers to improve their standard of life. Two IGP trainings were conducted and around 50 positive mothers were benefited in this program.

  • Awareness Program

In both Abstinence Club and RRC Club, we give awareness among students in different colleges. We have good rapport with other network and NGO’s in our working area.

  • Training to staff

Project personnel training are provided after identifying their needs and we have give appropriate training to build their skills and enhance their capabilities.

  • Participated in Religious leaders meet

Attended Religion leaders meet in Delhi and explained the problems faced by the positive mothers and also done Field level activities.

Members from our network represent as Positive speakers in many awareness programs

We hope and work towards the betterment and continuum of care and support in future.
